Hand Hygiene / Infection Control

Hand hygiene is the single most effective strategy to reduce the risk of infection.

In response to previous infection data, the hand hygiene program has increased monitoring of hand hygiene compliance in high risk areas, including the Emergency Department and Haemodialysis Unit.

As an organisation, GV Health is consistently achieving above the Department of Health target rate of 70 per cent.

SAB Rate

To monitor the success of the hand hygiene program, GV Health uses the number of patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia per 10,000 occupied bed days.

The Department of Health set a target of less than 2 patients with SAB per 10,000 bed days.

With implementation of infection control strategies in the clinical areas, in particular with management of intravenous lines and catheters, GV Health has achieved the target for three continuous quarters.
