GV Health staff are asking the question / Improving Aboriginal Health

Paul Briggs visiting Intensive Care during NAIDOC Week

GV Health staff have received training to ensure they ask the question “Are you an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander?”, encouraging patients to identify their cultural heritage.

GV Health has a responsibility to collect data from all patients to better understand the health needs of different groups and individuals in the community.

Good decision making depends on good quality information. To make good decisions for the health of the ATSI members of our community, it is important to properly collect data on non-Indigenous patients as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.

This enables us to better understand how health issues for Indigenous Australians might be the same as, or different to, other Australians.
